OKLAHOMA CITY
Over the past weekend, I was in Oklahoma City sponsoring a small show, Meditation along with OKC based Group Fly Clothing. The headlining act was rapper extraordinaire, Jabee.

I road tripped it up to Oklahoma City with my friends, Info Red (who also performed)...

DJ Niro...

and Mando, the (big, bad, evil) promoter.

As the guys were doing their thing, I was focused on doing mine - which was to get as many people as I could to get to know my brand. I set up a small table for sales, passed out cards and passed out a few freebies too. Jabee and all of those who performed did a GREAT job of pumping energy into the crowd, this made doing my thing that much easier. C'mon, let's check out some of the people I met...

This is Desiree. She was the first to buy a FFB shirt at the show. I hadn't even unpacked and displayed my shirts yet when she came up to me and asked for the FFB pattern. After I settled in, I sold her the shirt and she immediately wore it! After the show, she joined us for dinner at IHOP. Here's to you Desiree, thanks for repping that FFB! And c'mon...Dallas isn't that bad AND YOU KNOW IT!

--------------------------------------------------------------------- DAY 2 ----------------------------------------------------------------------
After a night of pancakes and laughs, the next day we headed on over to TREE & LEAF CLOTHING. Tree & Leaf is a little boutique shop that allowed Group Fly to set up a pop up shop.

To the left is Jabee and to the right is his best friend, Vernon - the head of Group Fly Clothing. More on Vernon and his brand in a bit...

These two are Vineasa and B. Ave. They were at the show the night before too. Vineasa was being whipped around all day and night by Vernon. You see...Vineasa is Group Fly's intern and we all know whipping interns is allowed! As for B. Ave, I honestly don't remember what he does, I just remember him being a cool kid. And who doesn't wanna be a cool kid?!

These two are Eduardo and Luis Ramirez. They're new FFB fans and I'm sure that they will be repping proudly in OKC! Check out their blog and see the weekend from their point of view.

This is Chris Cao. He was officailly announced as the newest member of the Group Fly team during the show last night. His duties will mainly be creative direction / production. Before joining Group Fly, he actually had his own brand, Blooprint. But now he's off that. Welcome. To the. Future. Chris.

After hanging out and showing some support to our friends from Group Fly, we headed on over to CiCi's Pizza, hung out at the mall (Info Red needed to get a Starbucks (evil empire 2) fix) and hit up Wal-Mart ((evil empire 1) to buy some towels - everyone forgot to bring a towel. We all stayed at Jabee's place and he wasn't gonna have any of that towel sharing bullshit) - Don't we roll hard?
We then headed back to Jabee's place so that him and Info Red could begin work on their upcoming EP.

As I was sitting around and bullshitting, I took notice of Jabee's creative talents. In my opinion, it's always cool to see the final product but it's EVEN COOLER to see the process! Check out this Jabee track before it's even a track...
After Jabee's place. Him and Info Red gathered up everything they worked on and headed on over to aDDLib's place to record. I was all musiced out, so I went over to Vernon's place (aka Group Fly HQ). Vernon showed me his process, future designs, future packaging ideas and shared with me the deep meanings and roots of his brand. Me and Vernon instantly connected because we share the same drive and determination on how to run our brands. I talked to him for like 2 hours straight with no awkward breaks in-between about not only our brands but about life too. He's a multi talented guy - He not only runs Group Fly, but he also has a dayjob as a minister, produces beats, raps (his altar ego as a rapper is OB-1), does graphic design and to top that all off, he has a family and does P90-X! Anyways, just check out Group Fly!
So after Vernon's, we all met up and had some dinner. After dinner, we headed on over to Khanh's house party. Khanh is Jabee and Chris Cao's friend. Click HERE to see a picture of him. If you don't want to see his picture then watch the video of Jabee freestyling at the party below...
After the party, we just headed home. On the way home, me and Niro got into a huge discussion about the corruptness and lies of the world that we live in. I think our discussion lasted like 2 hours. It was pretty mind boggling shit. Niro even gave me shit to research so that we could discuss in further detail in the future. It was that deep.
--------------------------------------------------------------------- DAY 3 ----------------------------------------------------------------------
On the last day, we ate at the highly regarded Pho Hoa Lien Vietnamese Restuarant. It was the shit.
All in all, it was a GREAT TRIP! I met and made new friends with so many people! Big thanks to Jabee for letting us crash at his place and making us all feel like celebrities when walking around just about anywhere in OKC. Jabee is that NEW ISH!!! He stays off the drugs and alcohol and has a good head on his shoulders. Download his mixtape Mick Boogie presents Must be Nice HERE and you'll come to find the things that have happened in his life that helped mold him into the driven / humble / creative person that he is today.

Also...don't forget to check out the RANDOM section to see where we detoured when heading back home to Dallas.

SOME BOOKS
Let's face it, EVERYONE suffers from the creative block. It's when you just can't seem to motivate yourself enough to finish or get that project to finally start up. Alot of times it's from that oh-so harsh critique that beatens our morale down to a bloody pulp! We ALL heard / received this particular beat down from our boss', teachers, friends, family and last, but not least...our own self! (YOU ARE your biggest critic!)
When I go through this block, one of the things that I like to do is to simply open and read a book! I actually don't care too much for reading, but what I do like to read are things that I want to read! DUH! Here are some books that I've read / am currently reading...
DIGITAL SLR CAMERAS & PHOTOGRAPHY FOR DUMMIES | David D. Busch - My brother got me a new camera for Christmas and I'm trying to get the hang of it. Photography surely ain't an easy thing, so I'm hoping that this dummy can learn a thing or 2 (or 3 or 20 or 1000!) from this book. Big thanks to my cousin for letting me borrow it. Don't be surprised if you don't get it back until 2011.

HOW TO BE A GRAPHIC DESIGNER WITHOUT LOSING YOUR SOUL | Adrian Shaughnessy - This is a great book that helps aspiring graphic designers how to survive in the mega critical graphic design world. Not only does it have words of wisdom from world acclaimed designers such as Neville Brody, Natalie Hunter, Kim Hiothøy and Alexander Gelman to name a few, but it gets in-depth with the hurdles of growing into a solid graphic designer.

THE SAVVY DESIGNER'S GUIDE TO SUCCESS | Jeff Fisher - When I read this book, I thought to myself..."Damn! Why didn't I read this shit when I was still in school?" Jeff Fisher goes over a wide array of graphic design topics (and off-topics) including portfolio building, work space preferences, interview tests, e-mail etiquette, pit falls and even how to dress! I think this is an EXCELLENT book for someone still deciding whether or not to enter the graphic design field or for students currently going for their design degree.

YOU CALL THE SHOTS | Cameron Johnson - This book is about this kid, Cameron Johnson. He wanted to be an entrepreneur since he was like 1 second old or some shit. He actually started his first successful business when he 12. He bought Beanie Babies at a super discount wholesale price and would resell them over something called a website? (in which he created by himself), for like quadruple his original costs! He made $50,000 in his first year alone! When the Beanie Baby craze died down, he sold his company and has been recycling his profits through constant new business ventures.

UPSTARTS | Donna Fenn - In this book, Donna Fenn discusses / interiews Generation Y (12 - 29 year olds) entrepreneurs about their business strategies and tactics. Some of the entrepreneurs in this book include: Mark Zuckerberg (Facebook), Jake Nickell and Jacob DeHart (Threadless) and Bobby Kim (The Hundreds). To tell you the truth, I haven't even started this book yet. I just wanted to post it to put some pressure on myself to finally start it. I'll tweet about it when I've read it.

PUNK MARKETING | Richard Laermer & Mark Simmons - I guess it's kinda starting to show that I'm pretty fascinated with starting a business and how to market my brand better. When I first started Fur Face Boy, I thought I was just going to print some shirts here and there and then just somehow sell them, but then I began to realize that uhhhh....hell no, there's more to it than just that. Knowing that my brand is geared toward a younger demographic, I picked up this gem of a book, Punk Marketing. The book goes over branding strategies, guerilla tactics, exclusivity, story telling, being more personal, being more in-touch with your customer and so much more! Best thing about this book is that it's written like how normal people talk! Isn't that like, so like, one of the coolest things ever?!

ULTIMATUM | Jeff Loeb (Illustrated by David Finch) - Alright, alright...enough of those "book" books, let's move on to the real shit! So I was in comic shop (literally named Comic Shop) last week while in Florida and picked up this TPB, Ultimatum. I've been wayyyy behind in the comic game, so I asked the shop owner, I asks..."What is this about?" and he says to me, he says..."That came out last year. The Marvel Ultimate line is ending, and Marvel's way of ending it is to kill THE ENTIRE Ultimate universe." I bought it and read it on my plane ride back home to Dallas. That damn shop owner lied, the entire Ultimate universe didn't die, just like 97% of it did! Dont't believe me? Just read it for yourself then!

CLUMSY | Jeffrey Brown - This IT guy from my dayjob got me into Jeffrey Brown comics back in late 2008. He let me borrow his copy of Clumsy and I was instantly hooked! I've read my co-workers copy about 3 times over before giving it back to him and just recently bought my own copy and read it again already! If you want to kinda get a sense of how my inner feelings work, then you should read this book (or any other Jeffrey Brown book) and use it against me one day. I will be putty in your hands thus you will become my downfall. *Sigh*

FUNNY MISSHAPEN BODY | Jeffrey Brown - This is Jeffrey Brown's latest graphic novel. This one sways away from relationship stories and gets more in-depth with Jeffrey growing into his art / art style. From what sparked his love for art, to his days in art school, to Chris Ware, to even the creation of Clumsy! It was good to know that I wasn't the only one in the world who took harsh criticism while in art school.

Oh you know there's ALWAYS time for the EASTBAY CATALOG!

ALRIGHT! Feels good to bust through that creative block, doesn't it?! I'm gonna start on a new FFB design right NOW! Oh man, it's 1:11 am? I'll just start it sometime tomorrow then. Zzz...

LOVE, LAUGHTER AND HOPE
The last few days I was in Tampa, Florida hanging out and having an ABSOLUTE BLAST with my new friends and family, the 'Hopes.'

OH MAN! From mom to sis, sis's boyfriend to the care workers, family friends to grandma to the family dog - I LOVE THEM ALL! The star of the family though, is of course...the beautiful and dazzling, Miss Hope herself! Always with a smile on her face, her laughter WILL totally brighten up anyone's day! (If you're not familiar with Hope's story, please read HERE.)

Hope's room is a mighty explosion of PINK! (her favorite color) With loads of support from MANY, MANY, MANY people...

..friends, family and strangers...

..the first firemen on the scene. Yea, I know what "juicy" means, aren't you jealous?

And of course, her MEGA-FANTASTIC mom!

Let me explain to you (and this is just merely 1 example) just how mega-fantastic her mom really is...
So on the first night the family took me out to dinner at this great American restuarant (I had a delicious blue cheese burger) and I says to mom, I says..."Any good Vietnamese restuarants around here?" And mom says to me, she says..."Not many. None." So the next day she texts me and tells me to save my stomach for this...

That's right! A delicious home made Vietnamese dinner! Mom, mom's friends AND Grandma teamed up to whip up an INCREDIBLE dinner! I meant to take a picture before most of the food was scarfed up, but it looked and smelled SO good that it totally slipped my mind! But shit, the 15% of food that's still left still looks pretty damn delicious!
For the two nights that I visited, I stayed real late (one night until 2am!) just hanging out, goofing around and talking about the most random subjects. A few subjects were: Movie / music talk, Chick-fil-a talk (you guys know my Chick-fil-a secret now! Use it wisely) crushed ice talk, dreamie talk, dog talk, toilet seat cover talk, phone app talk, air freshener talk, spooning talk and even farting talk! (Yes! I said FARTING!) Hope's Mom says that it's been a long time since she's seen Hope laugh this much!

The ENTIRE family consists of beautiful, sweet, kind hearted, caring, down right AMAZING people! I have to admit, I was SUPER nervous before I met everyone, especially Hope. I found moments where I was saying to myself..."There she is! She's right next to me! The girl who played a part in inspiring my brand is mother F ing right the F next to me!" It's crazy because 2 years ago, I was just reading about her and now I'm actually at her house, hanging out with her AND her family! I was just straight star-struck.
Meeting Hope and her family makes me feel stronger and EVEN MORE inspired / determined. EVERYONE needs to recognize, notice, and cherish what they have and what they can do, because just like that - it can be taken away in an instant. I also look at everything with a new perspective. For example: The longass security lines at the airport, the Jordans I couldn't get my hands on, going to work, paying bills, the zit that just appeared on my face...why complain when everyday she fights and takes it ALL in stride. With her determination / will and the MANY caring people in her life, I really do believe that she'll get back to 100%.
Mom let me know that I'm now apart of the family's "Circle of trust." It's hard for the family to trust people after what happened, so for her to bring me in feels pretty damn badass. I'm also invited to Hope's birthday in April, mom says we'd go to the beach. Hopefully, I won't be freezing this time around.
I miss you ALL.

HOPE FUND UPDATE
Last month I created the FUR FACE BOY HOPE FUND. Read more about it HERE. Together WE raised a total of $2327.32! I was gonna mail the check to the girl and her family but then thought..."Neh." Instead, maybe I'll just paypal it to them? Hmmmm...Neh...

...I figure the best way to deliver the check would to be IN PERSON!

That's right! I'll be in Tampa, Florida for the next few days making new friends, new memories and spreading some Fur Face Boy love along the way! My flight leaves in a few hours, so I better get some sleep. As always, I'll be documenting my travels via my twitter, so make sure you're following me. I'll be seeing you when I get back! Bye!

2009 YEAR IN REVIEW
I still can't believe just how fast 2009 zoomed by! All in all, I saw it as a VERY successful debut year for Fur Face Boy. Below are highlights from each month of 2009. If you're not familiar with the brand, I think this is THE post to catch up!
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
JANUARY - The idea of Fur Face Boy came about in October 2008, but it was early the next year where I took things seriously and started to develop, produce, print and market my ideas. EVERY business needs a website, so on January 17, 2009 this blog launched with a post about what else...creating this very site!
OTHER HIGHLIGHTS: San Diego (Agenda Tradeshow), FIRST EVER Fur Face Boy sale
DID YOU KNOW? When furfaceboy.com first launched, only about 25% of it was working. Everything else was still under construction.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
FEBRUARY - It was great that I made a few sales here and there, but I thought to myself..."If I really want to start making some real sales, then people are gonna need to know that this brand exists!" So through a freshly made myspace account, (I didn't believe in social media sites before 2009) I started sending out messages to random people asking if they wanted a FREE Fur Face Boy shirt! My goal was to have 1 person from each state own a Fur Face Boy shirt!
OTHER HIGHLIGHTS: How I earned some capital to start Fur Face Boy.
DID YOU KNOW? Before having my own bags, I'd ship out shirts in zip-lock freezer bags with a hand written message written directly on the bag! To this day, ALL of my orders still come with a hand written message! How long will I do this for? Beats me.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
MARCH - As I continued to mail shirts across the nation, I also kept spreading my brand by just living my life. Everywhere I went, I did my best to let everyone know. I'd always take pictures of people repping FFB (either with a shirt or business card) and tell them to check the site the next day, they would tell their friends and their friends will tell other friends! Month by month the brand continued to buzz!
OTHER HIGHLIGHTS: I met Stacy London and Clinton Kelly, Chron.Ron, The Fur Face Boy Box Set was just starting to take shape.
DID YOU KNOW? I've know my friend Jeff Vo, since the 7th grade. One time in Jr. High, Jeff got pink eye and I told him to rub his eye with his finger and then to rub my eye - we both got to go home sick that day! WOOOO!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
APRIL - In April, I pretty much just kept living my life and promoting. I had most of my designs on hand, but my webstore was still in the works. Promote, promote, pomote!
OTHER HIGHLIGHTS: Fur Face Boy Bags, Fur Face Boy Photoshoot, TCU, Italy, Crystal Castles, Half Marathon training
DID YOU KNOW? Since it was April, I played an April Fool's joke. You wouldn't believe all the emails and messages I received from people who thought the picture below was real. People - try reading, will ya?

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
MAY - I DID IT! I actually mailed out Fur Face Boy shirts to ALL 50 States! The feeling was TRULY AMAZING!
OTHER HIGHLIGHTS: Series 1 Line up, The Grand Opening of the FFB webstore, FFB Fan Mail, How badass my mom is, FFB's arrival into Shogun
DID YOU KNOW? I used to puppysit Anhtuan and Chau's dog, Jim. One time, I had Jim on my bed and he pissed on it. It was SO terrible.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
JUNE - Ahhhh...social media sites. Like I said earlier, before 2009, I didn't believe in them. But now that I have a brand / business, these sites are vital to continue the marketing of my product. I see these sites to be just as important as this blog! So c'mon! Follow me on twitter, be my fan on Facebook, and while you're at it...what the hell, be my friend on myspace too!
OTHER HIGHLIGHTS: Grace Demakes, John-E Specs, Production, My dad
DID YOU KNOW? John-E Specs drops the Fur Face Boy name in his new track "Get Down" Listen to it HERE.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
JULY - July was CRAZY busy! But out of all the craziness that month, I'd have to say that the launch of FFB at Centre tops it off. The Centre guys called me up to talk about how much they really liked the box set I created for them and suggested we do a FFB launch at their shop. The launch was a BIG success! Being at Centre took my confidence in my brand to a whole other level. We got some things coming up in 2010, so watch for it.
OTHER HIGHLIGHTS: The Box Set, Kixpo Exclusive, Kixpo, Kid Cudi, Kid Robot
DID YOU KNOW? James from Centre now works at Kid Robot.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
AUGUST - I decided to take a dissapointed fan out to dinner. His name is Brandon Mitchell and now he's one of my biggest fans! He invited me over for Christmas and now he's inviting me to his birthday!! I'm crazy busy, so I'll have to check my schedule. I'm grateful to have a fan like Brandon! Constant twitter "@'s", facebook replies, emails, praise, support and love...I'm starting to feel like Paul Sheldon!!!
OTHER HIGHLIGHTS: Chores, Shogun Grand Opening Party, Notebook full of feelings, Pool Prep
DID YOU KNOW? I threw up on my Jordan III's after attending the Shogun Grand Opening Party. Ugh. Not cool.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
SEPTEMBER - Definitely without a doubt, the Pool Tradeshow was THE post of September. I learned plenty while exhibiting and now know that NO - it's not easy. Due to the weak economy and FFB being such a new brand, many buyers were afraid to take a risk on FFB. I remember being in my hotel room not being able to sleep. I was thinking back at how hard I worked during the days leading up to the show - frustrated and depressed over why I couldn't pull in any orders on the first AND second days! So on the last day, I just decided to have a good time and to just take in the experience. I met alot of great people, made some new friends and learned plenty from many great brands. In the end, the show wasn't a total disapointment, I received much needed brand exposure, one direct order, an order from New Zealand and continue to get follow up inquiries from many retailers from around the world. Oh and let's not forget, my booth was directly across from the beautiful ladies of American Apparel! Anyways, in 2010, I want to give Pool one more go! Now that I know what to expect AND the fact that my brand is a bit seasoned, I think I can really make some noise the next time around. SO WATCH OUT POOL! I'M COMING BACK FOR YOU!
OTHER HIGHLIGHTS: Good Records, Visiting my brother's house
DID YOU KNOW? I rented a Chrysler PT Cruiser while in Las Vegas for the Pool Tradeshow.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
OCTOBER - This was another CRAZY busy month! But my most memorable moment for this month was most certainly my EPIC trip to New York City. I sent a box set to The Vault in Harlem, NY and they were totally down with the brand. In the letter that I enclosed in the box set (and ALL box sets), I stated that I would HAND DELIVER the first order - and that I did! The Vault was an AMAZING shop and to top that off the guys that worked there were all cool! When I showed up, they treated me like they knew me for years! AMAZING SHOP, AMAZING PEOPLE, AMAZING CITY! I LOVE NEW YORK! (I wouldn't live there though)
OTHER HIGHLIGHTS: FFB Pumpkin, My Idiot Left Hand, FFB Tat, Astro Fur, Austin, TX, Me vs. FFB
DID YOU KNOW? On the day of the FFB Vault release party, I was late because I got lost on the Subway. I called Junie to help me get to the Valut, but it was useless cause I had no idea where I was at. Eventually, I gave in and hailed a cab. I got lost in NYC about 5 other times as well. I'm horrific at the Subway. WHAT!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
NOVEMBER - This month was all about the FFB Series 2 release at Shogun. It seemed as if EVERYONE was ready for their Series 2 fix, so we got a pretty damn big crowd showing up to grab 'em up! On top of that, me and Shogun collaborated on a HIGHLY EXCLUSIVE shirt which sold out within 30 minutes! To this day, I still get emails from people asking if I have any left. Sorry, I don't. Me and the Shogun crew have been in talks about some more collabs in the future. When? We have no clue, but just know that THERE WILL BE ANOTHER! So make sure you keep up with me AND Shogun!
OTHER HIGHLIGHTS: Box Set Contest, Series 2 Line up, Parth, Alex & Ivan, FFB Symbiote
DID YOU KNOW? In the contest winner's (Bo M.) Box Set, I included her favorite candy and a special mix of music based on what she listens to.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
DECEMBER - From my first screen printer, to Johnny Cupcakes, a teenage girl, to the many FFB fans; this month was all about giving back and showing love to the people who helped take FFB where it's currently at. Without their words of wisdom, determination and praise I know my mind would never hold up against my own self destructing thoughts.
OTHER HIGHLIGHTS: Space Fur, Bear Mai's 14 teeth removal
DID YOU KNOW? The Fur Face Boy Hope Fund managed to gather a total of $2327.32! Also, Bear Mai (The OG FFB) is 100% healthy again! Best of all, his breath doesn't reek anymore!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
So there you have it! 2009 packaged together into one post. It's still so hard to believe 2009 is over, I've come to learn, do and experience so much during this past year. I remember how awful my 2008 was and how determined I was to make 2009 something to remember. And that IT WAS!
I've set the bar pretty high for myself in 2010, but with a year of experience under my belt, I just see my brand getting stronger and stronger by the year. I know (and believe me, I know) NOTHING IS GUARANTEED, but if I manage to stick to my goals, stay focused and work even harder at everything this year, then things should continue to progress and only get better! Check back in to this blog every now and then and you'll see. The groundwork for my brand has finally been laid, FUR FACE BOY HAS JUST BEGUN! Stay tuned...
ONE LAST DID YOU KNOW? I will still need to go over my "Things I want to accomplish in 2009 list" but will be saving that for the January 30, 2010 post. Why? Because that marks exactly one year since I posted the "Things I want to accomplish in 2008 list" post.
